Laptop recommendations…

I still haven’t decided to buy one yet, but thought I’d do a bit of research before I do.

What should I be looking out for? Any brands you recommend? Any to avoid?

And do you want to pay for it for me…;)

Hmmm, well, it mostly comes down to personal preference, but I’ve found HPs & Sonys to be a bit unreliable. I’ve had a Toshiba, which was good (though that was about 7 years ago), and I now have a Dell, which is great, as long as you don’t get one with an exploding battery :P Or a MacBook that has one too… But that doesn’t happen very often… On a more sensible note, I have found the Dell very reliable, I’ve had it for 5 years without any problems, and it was easy enough to upgrade the HDD and RAM. Oh, and it was reasonably priced too. But I’d watch out for Vista at the moment, some guys at Uni have it, and it’s a bit buggy, and not everything works with it. And you know the Mac ad, the “Cancel or Allow” one? My friend said it’s just like the ad, except worse! Just a few thought there… I could be here all day, but I really should get back to my assignment… :)

    macs are nice, but expensive.

Have you looked into second hand computers? (another keyword is ‘refurbished’)

You really need to make a list of features you are looking for, like “can do” “for how long” “how heavy/fast/etc”, in three categories. Those categories are: “deal breakers” (that is, must haves, or it won’t do what you want it to) “nice to have” and “don’t want”

then, it could be an idea to look at the manufacturers websites, and go through the “customise” option. Now gasp at the price, (don’t worry, you haven’t spent it yet!) and go back through and realistically choose options.

This is a good way of working out what is out there.

And Ditto on the assignment Dave.

Same here with the assignment - 1500 words to go of a 1500 word case study!!

ANyway, from what I could tell from a bit of Google work, Dell has a pretty good reputation. I’ll see how it goes…

I said I wouldn’t engage in Mac advocacy at dinner tonight…. but it’s not at dinner any more so I’m allowed. Get a Mac! :-P
In all seriousness… you can get one of the new MacBooks for no more than an equivalent PC would cost you… and they can run Windows and all your Windows stuff now anyway so you don’t lose anything. And you get to run all the cool Mac stuff as well, and you get a shiny nice-looking computer! ;-)

Also, good to meet you tonight. I think this is my first post on here despite having been reading for ages, but now you know who I am!

Sorry Jas, but my Bible says that Macs are tools of the antichrist.

    I’ll be praying for you…;)
