Chewing Pencils Christmas Cartoon Winner Announced
Published November 7th, 2006 in Cartoons & CartoonistsReproducing this post from Chewing Pencils for those that are interested in such things!

Congratulations to Ming from Artmaker for being selected as the very first Chewing Pencils Group Drawing Project winner!
Darren Rowse from ProBlogger chose this cartoon (above) from seventeen entries as his favourite, with Tony from Success from the Nest chosen as runner up. Adrian from Antrageous, Dave from The Cartoon Blog and Ricemutt from Experiments in Finance all received honourable mentions. (Links to all the cartoons below).
Of the judging task, Darren said:
“Matt had 17 entries submitted and gave me the difficult job of choosing one to win. The choice was difficult (and I’m not just saying that because all judges say that type of thing when announcing a winner) but because I’m not a cartoonist, I wasn’t sure whether to judge it on humor, drawing style, message and lastly because I found something to like in all of the 17 entries! Oh the pressure! But in the end I narrowed my favorites down to a top five (which I chose for a variety of reasons) and then picked my winner. I chose it largely because it made me laugh.”
Once again, thank you to Darren for giving his time to judge all the entries, and thank you to all that entered. Ming will appear as the Chewing Pencils feature artist in the next few weeks, when we will find out a little more about the world of the ArtMaker!
If you’re here to look at all the entries, the list is below. If you want to be informed when the next project commences, sign up to the Chewing Pencils newsletter (link above right). If you entered the project, remember that you still have one more step to go…
Being a successful cartoonist means far more than simply producing cartoons. To be successful, you must be able to sell what you produce and get a good price for it. Thus, the next step of this project is to try and sell the work you have submitted (or somethng like it if you didn’t quite get around to it). Each cartoon has two main themes - Christmas and blogs. What would be a likely market for such work?
Computer/internet magazines are a good place to start. Web sites and blogs might be even better. Christmas newsletters or bulletins for community groups or corporate business are a possibility too. Some of the entries would make fabulous price tickets for Christmas specials in a computer store.
So, get to work! Start submitting your ideas to potential clients, always remembering tips seven and eight from the Top Ten Tips for Becoming a Professional Cartoonist.
When you sell your work, come back to this post and leave a comment outlining how, when and where you sold it.
Anyway, congratulations to Ming! And thanks to everybody who entered. Here is the entire list of submissions:
