Why My Respect for the Amish has Grown
Published October 9th, 2006 in Articles of Interest, Misc StuffI’ve always had a respect for the simple living of the Amish communities around the world. When my life gets super busy and life seems far too full, I wonder whether the Amish folk are closer to fulfilling ‘life to the full’ than I will ever be.
Anyway, with the shooting of the Amish school girls last week, and the subsequent reaction from their community, my admiration and respect for the Amish has sky rocketed for two main reasons:
1. The Amish have set up support funds for the famlies of the girls killed, and for the family of the man who did the killing.
2. Representatives of the Amish community have visited the family of the man that did the shooting, embraced them and began working towards forgiveness.
To my mind, these are incredibly powerful statements of the strength of the Amish community and the depth of their faith and conviction. Can we ever hope to imitate such faith in a consumerist society with a consumerist faith?

I think that the Amish simplicity of life leads to conviction. They know what they believe, and act on it!
It is something that we lack as we over complicate our beliefs sometimes (a modern “over thinking”)
we should emulate the Amish with the conviction of the base beliefs- humility and emulation of Jesus.
