Faith, Perspective and Passion
Published September 1st, 2006 in Hearing the WordI did something last Sunday that is always risky in an Australian church.
I let a Pom give the message.
Not that there is anything inherrantly evil about the English, it’s just that we Aussies are so superior to them in every way that it is difficult to take whatever they say seriously!
Nevertheless, Ollie took the pulpit on Sunday night and proved that there is an exception to every rule…
Ollie shared three things that he had found were essential elements in his Christian journey. Here’s a summary:
1. Faith
This might seem a bit obvious, but it is amazing how often this is forgotten. Ollie spoke of the trust that is required to live a life of faith. God has said he will equip us, so we need to trust that he will. How that takes place might be totally unexpected, but that’s up to God!
2. Perspective
Given that we live in a culture that promotes the individual over community, and Christianity is a communal faith, it is little wonder that we find this one so difficult too. Ollie said “Perspective helps us move beyond being an acceptable Christian to being an authentic Christian.” Perspective helps us ask how we can become more God-like. And perspective can help us see things the way God sees them.
3. Passion
Ollie said something that I don’t think I’ve considered before. He pointed out that we are more susceptible to temptation if we are not passionate about living out our faith to the full. This is something worth thinking about more deeply…sometime!
Ollie has a unique presence and approach to speaking from God’s word, and anything I type here can’t even begin to do it justice. But let me say his message was from the heart and thus carried the sort of weight that comes from somebody who has lived what they’re saying.
Thanks for sharing it with us Ollie!

very good, very relevant points. I’ve been inspired and encouraged to work at being closer to God. Thanks Ollie!
PS Matt- typo, first line after “Perspectives” - Christianity doesn’t have 3 t’s.
It does the way I spell it..:)
