What’s a “Rough-Nut” Christian?
Published by Matt Glover January 23rd, 2006 in Questions of FaithWe had a thanks-giving service last night with a local parachurch/mission organisation which saw about 250 missionary minded young people come together to tell the stories of what God had been doing through them over the last few weeks.
It was hot - 42 degress centigrade. So all the doors were opened, drinks flowed pretty freely and nobody really cared if you lay on the cold concrete to try and ease the effects of the heat.
Anyway, one of the girls stood up and told of how her team had encountered a girl whose little brother had been killed in a car accident that week. They were able to care and pray for this girl and her family, support them by attending the funeral and be overwhelemed as they heard this girl pray and forgive the driver of the car. It was a powerful story.
But one thing she said that struck me. The girl whose brother had died had a few Christian friends. But the speaker described them as “rough-nut” Christians. That is, not nice-churchy types but ones who had their heart in the right place (her words).
I had to smile. I’m not sure she realised what she said - I wonder how close to the truth she really was…
Ahh rough nut Christians. If only we could see more of this brand of genuine chrisianity. But with people lying on concrete floors and drinks flowing freely (?) this sounds like their kind of service anyway. Refreshing, keep it up.
