Some Resources for Being a Dad
Published November 1st, 2005 in ManhoodJust to follow up from my last post on Manhood I thought I’d post three resources that I’ve found quite powerful in challenging me about what it means to be a Dad. They’re probably not what you would expect, but then again, either is being a Dad…
Rohald Dahl’s Danny the Champion of the World.
I read this when I was a kid. The very last sentence says something like, “Kids’ want a Dad who is sparky!” For some reason I’ve remembered that. The Dad in the book is a fun one and takes his son on all sorts of adventures. Together they come up with a plan to capture pheasants without using guns. I know it’s a kids book, but it speaks a lot to fathers.
Finding Nemo
Another kids thing. I first watched this not long after Thomas was born. Reminded me of my priorities and what should come first.
The Incredibles
the family that plays together….
Big Fish
Tim Burton’s strange but engaging movie about a son trying to get to know his dying father. The scene where the son carries his Dad into the river at the end is moving.
I haven’t looked for or come across any study guides or anything like that for these books/movies, but can imagine that there could be plenty of discussion where they to be shown/read with a group of fathers.
If you’ve got any other good ones, post them here!
