I’ve made a point of trying to explore the full depth and bredth of worship with out evening gathering over the last four and a half years. Partly becasue I think worship has been hijacked by certain parts of the Christian movement, but also becasue I am simply not musical. I often find music and singing gets in the way of worship and shudder at some of the words I have seen projected on the screen.

But, I also recognise that music and singing form a big part of worship in scripture and our Christian heritage. In fact, singing is perhaps the best expression of worship we can do together. Every other form or style we might do in each others company, but singing is done together.

Anyway, this past Sunday night, our musical types took the reigns and lead us on a journey of worship through music. Interspersed were some testimonies about how worship had impacted life.

One girl said, “When I worship I feel like I’m helping the world.”

The more I think about it, the more I am stunned by how powerful that statement is. She went on to say that worship causes her to see the world differently, to go up to the friendless at school and hang out with them and to be the sort of person she thinks Jesus would be in her world.

Imagine if all of our forms of worship motivated this sort of action every week. Imagine the difference that would be made in the lives of those on the fringe. Imagine the difference that would be made in the lives of Christian people…

Anyway, the band played a heap of great stuff, and we finished with a moving rendtion of the hymn “How Great Though Art”. No modernising of the words. No contemporising the tune. Just played and sang how it was written.

And it was absolutely beautiful.
